How do I register for college credit?

Accepted NSLC students who wish to register for the College Credit Option should visit the NSLC website for enrolled students and complete the online registration form. You will need your NSLC Student ID, which was provided in your NSLC acceptance packet, to register for the credit option.

Will registering for college credit take away from time with NSLC?

The college credit option enhances your NSLC experience without taking away from your on-campus activities. The AU credit course is online, self-paced, and asynchronous, giving you the flexibility to complete reading and writing assignments on your own schedule.

Students in NSLC programs held the week of June 30 will begin their online course after returning home. Those in July and August programs will access the course both before and after their campus program. No coursework is required while participating in the NSLC on-campus program.

Can I make changes to my registration, for example, adding or dropping a course or changing the grade type?

The College Credit Option introduces high school students not only to the expectations of college-level academics but also to the responsibilities of registration at a university. Students and their parents/guardians should note carefully the associated registration, records, and refund policies and deadlines. Any changes to a registration must adhere to the published deadlines and will be subject to the refund policy.

Upon notification of a change in registration received by the NSLC on or before June 1, 2025, the tuition paid for an AU course will be refunded. If a student cancels registration on June 2, 2025 or later or leaves while a program is in session, no refunds will be permitted. This policy is necessary to account for the program costs incurred with each enrollment.

Communicating Changes in Registration

Changes in registration (with the exception of a request for pass/fail) before the first day of the AU course should be communicated directly with NSLC. Changes in registration on or after the first day of the AU course must be communicated directly to AU at collegecredit@american.edu. Requests to change grade type to pass/fail should also by emailed to collegecredit@american.edu.

How much does college credit cost?

In recognition of the academic excellence and leadership qualities of NSLC students, American University is offering a special reduced tuition rate of $1,004 per credit.

Please note that AU will issue a 1098-T tax document reflecting the financial aid received by students.

Can I receive a refund if I decide not to complete the program?

How do I contact my professor?

Professors are happy to answer any questions you might have regarding your course. Several days before the start date, you will gain access to your course via AU's Canvas platform. The course site will contain a welcome letter from your professor. During your course, you may contact your professor at any time to ask questions. Your professor will also hold office hours via Skype or Zoom. Contact information will be available on your course syllabus.

What is expected of participating students?

When is my work due? How should I submit it?

Students will be assigned reading and writing assignments appropriate for a one-credit college-level course. Working at times that suit your own schedule, you are expected to complete assignments according to assigned deadlines with a final course completion date of August 8. Your course syllabus will provide precise information on assignment due dates.

Do I receive a letter grade or a pass/fail grade?

Students usually take the college credit as a letter grade (A-F), especially if they anticipate seeking to transfer the credit to another school. Many colleges and universities do not accept transfer credit taken pass/fail. However, students may elect take take the course on a pass-fail basis. To take the course pass-fail, a student must elect to do so before the withdrawal date specified on the course syllabus. For more information, contact collegecredit@american.edu.

How and when will I receive my grade?

Upon completion of your course, your grade will be posted on Canvas. In addition, you will be provided instructions for ordering an official American University transcript which documents your credit and grade.

How do I obtain a transcript after completing the program?

h2

NSLC students who took an AU credit course with your NSLC program and would like to receive an official American University transcript of your grade will need to submit a transcript request. Follow the directions for "New User" through the online ordering system.
